it could be the wires leading to the pump are old and worn, the best fix is possibly to buy a new one, youl be out about $150 but with those cars its worth it. Hi, i had an escort gt 91 and has the same problem, i don't know exactly why that problem happens but it's not expensive too make change the fuel pump, maybe for 150-200 dollars you got it fixed.
